Atlantic swell is what separates a good dive day from a ruined weekend. Wind is what you see in a weather app; swell is what arrives two or three days later, generated by a storm system somewhere off the coast of Newfoundland or in the North Atlantic. Understanding the difference β and what to look for β will make you a significantly better dive trip planner.
Swell height is the first number you'll encounter. This is the significant wave height β roughly the average of the highest third of waves in a given sea state. For shore diving in Ireland, anything over 1.5β2 metres is going to make entry and exit difficult and potentially dangerous at many sites. Boat dives can handle more, but even then, rough surface conditions make diving miserable and increase the risk of injury during entry and exit.
Swell period is arguably more important than height. Period is the time in seconds between wave crests. A short period of 5β7 seconds means the waves are locally generated β they'll arrive with a weather front and leave with it. A long period of 12β18 seconds means the waves have travelled from a distant storm and will arrive even when local conditions look settled. The classic example: a storm off Newfoundland generates a long-period swell that crosses the entire Atlantic and arrives on the Irish coast three days later, with no wind and blue skies overhead.
For divers, this matters enormously. You can have a perfectly calm morning, a flat sea, and still get hammered by a 2-metre swell from a storm that happened last Tuesday. That's why checking swell forecasts β not just wind forecasts β is essential before any dive trip.
Swell direction determines which coast is exposed. Swells from the northwest hit the Donegal and north Mayo coast hardest. Southwest swells affect the Clare and Kerry coasts. An east coast site like Dublin Bay will hold when the west coast is blown out β and vice versa. Knowing your site and its exposure angle is half the battle.
The practical takeaway: look at the Met Γireann marine forecast and note both the wind and the swell data. Check the swell period β if it's above 12 seconds, assume some residual energy will arrive at exposed sites even if the forecast is light. Tide and swell together: Spring tides combined with a building swell can make shore entries at some sites genuinely hazardous. Always factor both together, not in isolation.
The ocean doesn't care about your availability. But with decent swell awareness, you can be in the right place at the right time a lot more often.
